Rice Pudding and Newtown Residents Association
Opening Friday 25 October is Newtown in Photographs and Story, a Wellington Heritage Festival event hosted by the Newtown Residents’ Association and supported by Rice Pudding gallery.
The show has a selection of early photographs of “New Town”. Some are from Chris Rabey’s personal collection, and others were collected by Laura Rosier to illustrate her history of Newtown.
The gallery will be open between 11am and 4pm, on Saturday 26 to Monday 28 October, and Thursday 31 October to Sunday 3 November.
The original Newtown Hotel (cnr of Rintoul Street and Constable Street) was built in 1876 by Charles Moody, who allegedly said that “A new town will grow around it”. The original wooden building was replaced in 1902 with this brick and plaster building, which was later converted into the Ascot Theatre.
