Artist Statement -

When the Flowers Bloom is a collection of textile collages that explore joy, nature, and everyday moments. Made with painted cotton fabrics, the works are layered through appliqué and patchwork to form narrative compositions.

Recurring motifs, such as snails, birds, and the Kōwaowao leaf thread through the series, reflecting the small details of daily life and the natural world.

Influenced by a background in printmaking and a childhood surrounded by fabric and
patchwork, Emily approaches collage as a playful, intuitive process. Shapes often emerge from sketchbook drawings, doodles, and observations, gradually evolving as
layers are stitched together.

Timed with the beginning of spring, When the Flowers Bloom carries a soft optimism, encouraging viewers to pause and notice the beauty in small shifts, forms, and colours.

Happy spring!

Please join Emily to celebrate the opening of her solo exhibition next Thursday 25 September from 4.30 to 7pm.
